From my observations of our behavior we actively strive to identity ways to differentiate ourselves. My belief is that a motivator for this behavior is a desire to somehow exempt ourselves from some particular portion of the laws that govern our existence. We seem to continually strive to find ways to circumvent the laws of nature. In our current economy we have seen the side effects of the actions of those who we have entrusted with the responsibility of managing our economic systems. Their attempts to dream up tools to evade the basic rules of finance have resulted in grave outcomes.
Because the need to differentiate ourselves from ourselves is such a powerful motivator we continually look for the means to do so. Anything from the car we drive to the house or neighborhood we live in. Out of fear that the normal rule of life will govern our existence we seem to make numerous and repeated efforts to find some excuse or reason why we should some how be exempt to the rules up to and including trying to postpone our deaths. Each death is the result of having lived once life is gone death follows. Natural rule.
I believe the false hope that if we can somehow separate ourselves from the other folks then we can operate in life in a manor that is not governed by the same rules as those less fortunate ones that are left behind in "the ghetto". So if there isn't a ghetto then we should find a way to make one so those other folks can live there and we who are the fortunate ones can live over here where the rules of life are applied more to our liking.
